The claddagh apparently comes from an old story of a king in love with a young maiden, it symbolizes the offering of his hands, his heart, and his crown. Was there ever a king in ireland? Possibly just a myth.

Traditional Claddagh ring was given in friendship or worn as a wedding ring, the design and customs originate from the Irish fishing village of Claddagh located just outside the old walls of the city of Gallway, first produced in the 17th century during the reign of queen Mary II, though elements of the design are much older.
I hope this helps.

I think it originates from Co.Galway in ireland. It has to do with what way you wear it on your finger, if the heart is pointing away it means you are searching for love and if its pointing in it means you have a partner..(of it could be the other way around) but I come from Ireland and have always got the impression so has the claddagh.

It is sometimes used as a wedding ring, an engagement ring, or a friendship ring. Depending on the finger it's worn on, and the direction it faces, it can even indicate whether or not one is available for a new romance.
