It's some sort of pureblood fortune that the Potter side of Harry's family attained. I don't really know but it will all be revealed.
Just go to your local bookstore on July 21st and get Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

They were Aurors? I dont think we know what James and Lilly did after Hogwarts, yet. But like someone already said, all the money was passed on to James wich in turn was passed on to Harry. I think JKR said we'll find out about that in the last book.

Maybee the aurors you're thinking of is Neville's parents. Frank and Alice Longbottom were famous aurors.

jk rowling answered this question in an interview. she said that james potter had a lot of family gold (meaning, they inherited money from their parents), which was why he and lily didn't have to work a lot.

it is the Potters' family fortune. Lily had no part in it. It was just the money that the pure blood " Potters" had passed on to their son James, who passed it on to harry.
