Okay, so we've been playing silly 70's and 80's songs for our young boys to dance to. Mr. Roboto is a popular choice. Having never really paid attention to the lyrics before now, I was driven to look up the story and lyrics. I've already figured out that the song is about Robert Orin Charles Kilroy (ROCK) who was in a futuristic prison for Rock-n-Roll people. Kilroy hollowed out one of the robot guards (Mr. Roboto) and hide inside of it in order to escape. However, there's one part I can't figure out. At one point, he yells, "I am the modren man!" I can't figure out what that word is. Is that some British permutation of "modern?"

Don't tell me that I'm mishearing it. The official Styx website has the lyric as "modren."

Modren is actually the english lettering for the simplified Japanese translation of modern. They both have the same meaning, but Dennis DeYoung used this as more or less of an acknowledgment to Japan where the previous tour (Paradise Theatre) had been such a success. If you notice in the album linear notes, the r is facing backwards. Just part of Japanese translations.

Or maybe it s just something only Dennis Deyoung really knows....Considering Styx is an American band, the whole British idea is out the door. Dennis was stuck on concept albums so Styx music was a little more cerebral than most rock music while he was in the group. True, the used a bit of Japanese in the song but i just believe it s a "Dennis" thing. After all, they practically kicked him out of the group for being how he was. Modren is just a reference to "post-modernism" and all has to do with the changing to a technical age. I think Dennis was a little ahead of his time but, back during the album, not everyone appreciated it.

I personally think that it was the song that destroyed Styx and the bandmates didn't want to go along with Dennis Deyoung's idea due to the alter ego problems he was having and I can see why they fell apart afterward, I don't think that Mr. Roboto is that great of a song and I liked Styx during the pre-Cornerstone era the best.

The lyrics (which deal with the "modren man [sic]" being a melding of machine and flesh and a play on the word "modern").

Dennis was such a visionary that he was aware the the internet would exist in a couple of decades and wanted people like you to ask these questions.

Actually the term is a differently spelled version of Modron, a creature from Dungeons & Dragons that are essentially robots from another dimension.
