Cookies are pieces of information generated by a Web server and stored in the user's computer, ready for future access. Cookies are embedded in the HTML information flowing back and forth between the user's computer and the servers. Cookies were implemented to allow user-side customization of Web information. For example, cookies are used to personalize Web search engines, to allow users to participate in WWW-wide contests (but only once!), and to store shopping lists of items a user has selected while browsing through a virtual shopping mall.

On a computer, cookies are little files that websites leave on your computer. You visit CNN.com, CNN puts a file on your computer showing you were there. It might put what edition you preferred (US or International) or it might put what ads you clicked on. Most advertisers put a cookie file on your PC to show you looked at their ad.
The reason advertisers do this is to track what you looked at, and show you similar or related things. If you clicked a travel ad, you may get shown (by automatic programs on web pages) more travel ads for cruises, airfare, hotels, camping, bed&breakfast sites.
Evil cookies leave too much information on your PC, like info about your userid, your password, or even more personal stuff that might be hanging around. The worst cookies come from porn sites. Do not ask me how I know this.
Go to Internet Options on the Tools menu and (I can't recall the exact steps) be sure you know when your computer will accept a cookie file, and when it will reject it. on a Mac, go to Preferences for IE, for Safari, or for Firefox.
Good luck with cookies.

This subject has been the debate of many newsgroups and online forums. Cookies are simply text files stored on your hard drive and cannot themselves harm your computer in any way. Typically cookies are used to remember logins and keep track of user settings on web-sites.
