The two are very different games and hard to compare really.

Both are MMORPGs, but they handle that very differently.

WoW is the standard most MMORPGs are being gauged on right now. It has a monthly fee after you pay for the software. It is presistant (meaning things don't stop happening), when you are offline or inatentive. An example would be someone coming from behind you and skinning all the beasts you kill for leather and kill new monsters that spawn in their place. Level is the most important aspect of WoW since it determines what skills you can learn and what equipment you can use. All character of the same level have access to the same skills, only talents and how they use those skills will be different. WoW has an enormus number of players, but a character on one server cannot interact with a character on another without changing servers, for a fee.

Guild Wars (and its 'expansions' all of which are really stand alone games) once you pay for the game, you don't have to pay a monthly fee, except if you want to increas the number of characters you want to use. Guild Wars uses an instance system similar to WoW's dungeons for everything that isn't a town. Only the people who are in your party when you enter the field can loot the drops that occur, and all those drops, and the status of monsters, resets when you leave the field. Instead of choosing just one class, a character can be built from two classes, and can pull moves from either skills list. Unlike Wow a GW character can only carry 8 skills and ablities into the field at any given time. This makes your skill arrangement, and not your level, the most important thing in GW. The skills and the equivalant of talents (skill points) can be rearanged freely when you are in town, so you can switch your role over whenever you like. Except for captured skills, all character of the same classes and distance through the story should have access to the same skills, but what skills they have on can varry wildly. While it may just be my opinion, footwork seems more important in GW. Multiple servers of each town exist, but a player can freely jump between them in game, once you enter the field, your server doesn't matter anymore.

It's personal preference as to which is better, but I believe that World of Warcraft takes the cake. It may cost $15 USD per month to play, but it's the far superior game. There's more classes, items, people, quests, and much more in World of Warcraft. It's depth is astounding, with many little details included that make you feel in the Warcraft universe. It is, in my opinion, the best MMORPG ever created, well worth the monthly fee. Besides, it's only $20 USD or $25 CDN to buy the core game now, so there isn't anything holding you back from getting started.

I will say (If you will play in original servers, that cost money) with no doubt that's World Of Warcraft (Wow) is the best Online game! In "Wow" has massive community, with millions of players, Wow has a large world to explore, i think even more then Lineage II! choose your game wisely, my choice is "Wow"

Guild Wars because you only have to pay once and you don't have to pay anymore. For World of Warcraft, you have to pay every month.
