Okay....
You know how people in gryffindor are brave, ravenclaws are smart, and Slytherins are well not good. What are hufflepuffs?

Well...there are a few answers to this, actually... in the first book, the Sorting Hat tells us:
"You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just an loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;"
(p188, The Sorcerer's Stone)

and in the fourth book, the Hufflepuffs take on a new characteristic:
"For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;"
(p 117, The Goblet of Fire)

But in the fifth book, the Sorting hat, after telling us what the other founders took into their houses, tells us:
"Good Hufflepuff, she took the rest.
And taught them all she knew,"
(p 205, Order of the Pheonix)

So, according to the Sorting Hat in the beginning, Helga Hufflepuff was jsut as picky as the others, taking on only those who were loyal and hardworkers. However, in the fifthe book, apparently she took the leftovers, what no other house wanted...
So, I'm thinking that if you are loyal and hard working above anything else, your put in Hufflepuff...but if you don't fit in anywhere, you can go into Hufflepuff as well.

Hoper that helps!

Hard working. Can you name a Hufflepuff?

How 'bout Susan Bones? Just thought I'd say.

This is The Sorting hat's song:

Song From Year 1
Harry Potter
&
the Philosopher's Stone
Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can top them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a steady mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!

I could answer your question but there is no way I could do it without using the words of someone else, which wouldn't be fair to them. Use this link below to go to an essay (one sided discussion) about the nature of the four houses. I think that it is really good, it explains how Slytherins aren't simply evil and Gryffindors aren't simply brave and how Ravenclaws aren't simply smart.

Hufflepuff, founded by Helga Hufflepuff, is the most inclusive among the four houses, valuing hard work, patience, friendship and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members. Its emblematic animal is the badger, and yellow and black are its colours. Pomona Sprout is the Head of Hufflepuff. The Fat Friar is its ghost. According to Rowling, Hufflepuff corresponds roughly to the element of earth. The Hufflepuff dormitories and common room are located somewhere in the basement, near the castle's kitchens.

Perhaps as a consequence of the broad principles of acceptance upon which it is founded, Hufflepuff has been stereotyped as the house of the unexceptional (or, more unkindly, as "a lot o' duffers"). In book one, Professor McGonagall stated that all four of the Houses had produced exceptional witches and wizards in their time, so, though the House is said to have forgone glory for centuries,[HP4] it is not without its share of exceptional individuals. One Hufflepuff of note is Cedric Diggory, who brought his house rare glory as its Quidditch captain and later as Hogwarts' champion in the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Seems to me that the hufflepuff was the best group. They are a mixture of everything. And why was Neville put in Gryfindor? I think that the sorting hat doesn't care about your inner qualities but what you want to be in. Wasn't that in one of the books....Chamber of Secrets? Something about your choice of house says more about you than what you actually are best suited for.

Hufflepuffs are kind and hard working! Usually not considered the brightest, but they try to be the best people they can.
