Marketing - it was a way for pubs and bars to have a day about beer and by dying it green you were somehow celebrating the Emerald Isle hero St Patrick. There are many holidays that are far more alcoholic like New Years and the 4th of July - this one just gets more press. Have a safe night home.

Its a shame that an essentially religious holiday should turn into a drunken debacle. The issue is that it is a generally trend to lack knowledge of history, culture and the world in general and by this ignorance to treat things that merit reverance with irreverance and even scorn. Just try to talk about the meaning behind the holiday with as many people as you can, and help others to realize that being proud to be Irish is something others before now had to fight for so we could enjoy it. Slainte!

It's a lot like New Year's Eve. You have to watch out for the people who take any holiday as a reason to get drunk, despite the original reason for the holiday.

Some people will use any excuse: bachelor party, New Years, 4th of July, graduation, St. Patrick's day.

Where did the Irish family go on vacation?

A different bar.

The Irish are great. They have pub's which are not really just a bar. It's a place to gather socially, eat, drink and be merry. Would you go to your grandparents to celebrate their birthday? If your celebrating with many family and friends, a pub is great place to get together...you don't have to clean up.
Most Irish (in Ireland) don't drink and drive, that's more American. I don't blame you for being careful, but still, Happy St. Paddy's Day.
BTW, did you know St. Patrick was actually an Italian?

Every holiday is becoming a reason to get drunk for many people, along with Birthdays and other large and small milestones.Myself,I don't need a reason to get drunk, just sufficient quantities of alcohol. My take on it is :If you have to rationalize why you drink, you may have a problem.
