Hi. So I've done a fair amount of html coding, and I'm familiar with optomizing an html site for search engines using the META tags for description, author, and keywords. Is there a similar thing that can be done in an XML file? Would I simply use META tags exactly as in html, or is it different?

Thanks.
Steve.

I write xml websites!

There are 2 flavors of xml for web pages.
1) XHTML, where it's much like html , the meta tags go in the head. the difference is the tag ends with /> instead of >
2 XML with XSL, there is no standard way to code a meta tag here, but you can just pretend it's XHTML (above) and put the meta tag in the XML.

Because my pretense may not work with all search engines, I always have some html pages for the search engines.

Only search engines and curious readers ever see your meta tags. The search engines are only interested in keywords and description (and maybe the ratings tags).

I put meta tags in my css files, my javascripts and just about anywhere! All hidden by the appropriate comment delimiters!

Here are two sites for you to have a look at:
http://www.submitexpress.com/metatags.html
With this free site you can either check or generate html meta tags.
This also free site generates .xml sitemaps which are used for the Google search engine:

To my knowledge, sitemaps are the only use for .xml files.
Meta tags are always coded in html and placed in the header part of your webpage.
