I have been to certain places who refuse to give me a cup or glass of even tap water- and told that I must pay for bottled water if I want any. Is that legal?

THanks for the answers so far... I forgot to state that I was refused water after paying for several strong drinks all night- and they even had restroom attendants watching the sinks to make sure no one was drinking from the faucets. Needless to say, I will not frequent there again!

It's legal as long as theyre not doing it because of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

Certainly that is legal. That has happened to me before and THAT was the last time I ever visited that business.
If they give water to a white man, but refuse to give water to a black one, then someone might have a legitimate complaint or at least grounds for a lawsuit. I am not sure how you would prove it, though.
Now if they refused a white man, but gave water to a black one, then the white guy is just out of luck. Hate is only something a white person can do, or at least that is the way those laws are enforced!

No it is not, however if you are buying drinks or are with people who are buying drinks and or there is entertainment, then I would say that they are practicing bad business and I would be sure not to patronize those establishments.

But, if you just come in off the street sit down and ask for water you are taking away from thier business by taking a seat that a paying (profitable) patron could be sitting at. If there is entertainment, the entertainment has to be paid for by the increased traffic that the entertainment brings in. If you are there for the entertainment you really should be buying products sold by the establishment.

In Chicago and its surrounds, you ask for Lake Michigan water that's more beneficial useful than bottled water and is derived immediately from the tap and is loose. I not in any respect heard of a bar refusing to grant a tumbler of water to a customer. Refusing to promote bottled water makes no experience. i don't know how they could experience about wandering loose water drinkers who may take up paying customer area. considering that all are potential shoppers, i visit't see you being refused in case you settle on "to start up" with a tumbler of water..

Don't know but I wouldn't think it would be illegal. If you want free water you can get some from the bathroom faucet or go home and drink water.

Yes it is legal. If you really want free water you can go to the bathroom and get it out of the faucet, but as long as they offer you bottled water you have no choice to pay for it.

It happens all the time. These free items are reserved for paying customers. The bar is there to sell beverages, not give them away.

Of course it's legal. Any place can refuse to serve you if they choose to do so.
