It can be a problem almost anywhere in India except for maybe Goa and Kovalam. As for Pondicherry, its not a problem for an unmarried couple to visit. It depends on how long you are visiting for? Also I'm not sure if you're Indian or someone visiting India. It would be easier if you are a foreigner visiting, its very acceptable then. If you're an Indian couple, then you have two options, either you book two separate rooms or you check in as a married couple. Typically they wont ask for any ID, so its fine. I've done that a few times in Pondy and have not faced problems, so I guess its ok. And avoid getting into any brawls etc that could lead to police problems and then they will want to verify if you're married etc and that can lead to problems. So stay discreet and you'll be just fine. Enjoy your holiday! Its a wonderful town, Pondicherry, surely you'll enjoy every bit of it. Especially the French Colony where you'll get some amazing food, some bit of shopping, etc.

As for which hotel to stay in, depends really on you're budget, what activities you're looking at, how many days, which season etc. But typically Pondicherry Inn, de Orient Hotel (upstar hotel) etc and a few dozen others are the options. Do a google search you'll find many options. You may also chose to stay at the Auroville Ashram, they have some beautiful options tho they're a bit off town.

This happens everywhere, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Chandigarh everywhere. The hotel authorities misunderstand you with locals finding place to have fun with your partner and complain it or extort money to let you go.

If you are looking for any such fun I would suggest going to Goa or atleast get your female partner to dress like your wife, e.g. vermillion, bangles etc. :)
