This will do the job>>

Subject: System Recovery

To get your computer back to looking like new, do "a system recovery"
I do not have the disk either. My windows XP, was already loaded on my computer, when I bought it. These instructions, will clean everything off of your hard drive, so you must back up anything that you want to save. I have done this three times, and I got these instructions, from a computer tech. When starting your computer, tap the F-10 key. click on next-yes-and follow the instructions, that come up on your screen. When you are finished, your computer, will look just like it did, when you first bought it. Do these steps, in order, when finished.
1. set up windows firewall, in control panel
2. windows update (click express)
3. install your anti-virus program (update)
4. install anti-spyware (update)
5. Install service pack 2
Good Luck..

You can't format the hard drive using only the hard disk.

To format the hard drive you have to boot from the installation disk.

1) Reformat and install. (Erased all data, some data may be recovered))

2) Repair install. (should not lose data) Backup files first.

These programs can be used to erase all the information off a hard drive so that it is not recoverable. Very similar to format.

DBAN will automatically and completely securely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

do you mean you want to format your main disk ( C:\) or another hard drive on your computer, if its another hard drive just go into "my computer" right click on the drive and choose format
If its the main drive ( C:\) you cannot do this without the windows install disk, it is impossible
