yes, the location can be traced. basically it locates the nearest tower from which you are connected and then its not too hard to trace you.

only authorized people can access the GIS data whch includes all the geographic info. authorized people can be local police..cell operators...etc.

due to technological advancement. cellular services tries to find out the signal strength, voice breaks, gprs connectivity etc etc etc, and in layman terms if they can check how much strength u r getting, they can very well trace you.

first what u can do is you can change ur cell number and then avoid giving it to people u dont trust...

thru a legal channel it is very much possible, some prive co.s (listed below) do it commercially too...

not just anyone. the ability to do these things exists, but not legally, and not for free, and not easily. disney mobile introduced something where parents could track their kids via a feature one their account, and that is about the closest, but if you just have cingular or verizon or something and give someone your number, then absolutely not.

i know because i work in the cell phone industry, and we have to get trained on things like this. there are gps databases that you can access with the right resources. resources cost money.

No, they can not. Them just having your cell phone number doesn't mean that they can track you. The worst that they can do is call you a lot, text you, etc.
