by the way thanks for everyone who isnt taking offence and actually answering the question. It is really throwing some light on my query, making me realise you are not all like bush and the 'folk' represented on programmes such as the simple life and 'sweet home alabama'...thats a joke :S

I really don't worry about what other countries think. I've got my own life and concerns.

I'm American and no we don't think the world is in awe of us. To tell you the truth most Americans have strong isolationist tendencies. That is we want our friends and neighbors to do well but are mainly concerned with America. Most Americans worry more about how to pay their house payment, make sure their children get a good education, and employment opportunities than anything else. The average American could care less if we are a super power, as long as we are safe within our borders. It has only been recently that we have discovered that the rest of the world hates us. Most Americans love Europeans - especially the British and French. In fact, excluding economic policy, most Americans would be very happy to have the British be the brains of the operation and the US be the brawn.

That's a real generalization but, speaking as an American, no, i don't think the majority feels that way at all. The current administration, on the other hand, likes to posture as if we do. And as for what you may see in the media, well, it's the media, if you get my drift - whatever is sensational gets the most play, one sound bite at a time.

When I was a lot younger I used to think this way. Not sure if it was true or not back then, but it sure felt that way.
I think it was because I thought all other countries were like what is shown on "Save the starving children" TV program.
I am now very aware that life in other places is just as good, if not better, in other countries.
So to answer your question, no.
I am embarrassed to be an American with Bush leading us.

pointless asking youll get loads of the arrogant bas tards saying we are great etc, why dont they realise and accept the fact that most people in the world doesnt like them,us british are the only ones that stick up for them and surely they can see from yahoo q an a that not a lot of brits like them.i know there are a lot of youngsters on yahoo that dont know any better, because they are not aware of the death and destruction america has caused,i cant believe the cheek of them because if i was american id be hanging my head in shame, but not yanks,i know there are a lot of brits share this view, thats why they are scared of terrorists if they stopped interfering and trying to take over the world no one would bother about them, theyll come unstuck soon

Contrary to popular belief, most americans don't sit around wondering how everyone else in the world can live without in and out burgers and prada bags.
Most of us just work hard and try to find time to enjoy ourselves. Just because we have a sense of national pride, doesn't mean we think anybody is "in awe of us".

I think most people have the same attitude as you do, that is until you have the opportunity to come here and live in a awesome country. You would be all over the opportunity!
