I don't earn much and I work hard for every penny I do get. And one thing that makes me smile is knowing that I am doing a little to help someone who has less than me. I sponsor a child in Ethiopia, he's doing well at school and he loves playing football. He'll never have the kind of life that I have been blessed with, but I can make things a bit better. It's not how much money you've got that matters, it's how much you want to make a difference nomatter how small that difference is. It's your choice to try and make someones world a little better, is it really so bad for someone to ask you if you will.

Hmm. What I guess what you're objecting to is the idea of someone with lots who doesn't give, relative to another who doesn't have lots, and does.

But wealth is rarely like that. The people who are worth 10 billion will usually have companies and thousand of people working for them. And all of those people get money for it, some of which they give to charity.

In addition, every penny that changes hands because of this person's wealth incurs tax - when people earn it, and spend it, and even save it. The billionaire himself pays tax - despite the best efforts of his lawyers - on anything he does with his money.

Ultimately even if the billionaire never gives a penny directly, huge amounts flow from him to the state. Even if little of the tax goes to charitable causes, the use it's put to pays for things that charity would otherwise have to cover.

I don't disagree with you, by the way - just playing Devil's Advocate.

Kelly B., Gal, you've hit the nail, on the accurate, back!!! unhappy, unhappy, unhappy, to assert, sure, you're correct. about seventy 2.872 % of at present's united states and international, imagine that's the right way. BTW Kelly B., you should well known that in case you save wondering intelligently, like this and many, many different circumstances in the previous 6 months, you basically may come to imagine like an self sufficient 'center of the roader' American. I pray that i'm round to welcome you to the 'real' international.

They are only asking, you are free to not give so why get so angry with them? As for the super rich, they will never give it away in this country, its just not part of their culture whereas in the US it seems to be something a rich person aims to do- endow a hospital etc. higher taxes at the top end would benefit society but there isn't the political will or guts to do this.

I think its pretty short sighted to think that I'll never need help from anyone during my whole lifetime. That being the case, I pick one charity each year and make a donation. Plus, I get it right back on my taxes anyway (as do most people) so it's not like it really hurts financially.

I think my idea of charity is different than yours. To me, giving a dog a bone, after I eat the meat, is not charity. To give the dog the meat and keep the bone for myself (I could make soup) would be charity. I am not rich. I am on disability after working very hard all my life. When I did work, I volunteered my time, because I didn't make enough money to donate. I volunteered to write programs and to make certain they came to be. I counseled for free, I was a court advocate for free, and I was a laylawyer for larger problems. Still, I think we all have ways to donate. For the rich man to give to a charity is not really charity, is it? For normal people to give extra days and years to charity is much more charitable in my mind.

Only 8 pence in the pound gets to charity. The reason they want us to cough up is because so many are on a good salary and they want to continue to get it. The president is usually on £150,000 a year, says it all doesn't it.
