when a news account says 'respected scientists deny global warming...', what is the first conclusion you draw about those scientists?

Well, they might be respected. They might also be wrong (and in any case, I think they'd deny the effect of human activities on global warming, rather than arguing against the trend in global temperatures, which is extensively documented).

'Respect' in the scientific world has more to do with the way you conduct your research (both technical and ethical aspects) than with your results... Of course, if all your results are awful, you won't get much respect either LOL!
But in any case, they might very well be respected and knowledgeable in some areas of expertise, while being relatively ignorant in others.

Personally, I'd investigate their publications and past¤t employment before passing any judgement. My first conclusion is that they're in denial, but what do I know?

My first thought is that they understand what they are talking about, unlike most people on both sides of the argument. My second thought is they were not described as experts, so maybe they don't.

That they are not unrespected politicians who think they know global warming because they produce a movie about it called "An Inconvinient Truth"!.

Creditability, supposedly they are not influenced by "outside forces" or politics. Their peers hold them in great esteem.

they got a degree from harvard, but still don't know a thing about global warming.
