I was running my computer on Windows XP, but when it started to freeze and jam, I downgraded it to Windows 98. Now, I can't use my external hard drive because the system doesn't recognize it. Why? Do I need to download a driver? It is a Western Digital 250 gigabyte harddrive. The model number is WD25001032. Please help. If you can give me a direct link, that would be great. Thanks

there are acouple reasons why it might not work.
1. You just need to download a driver to make it compatable for Win 98. Since you had XP before it probably recognizes drivers for XP and not 98 so The driver could just be the issue.

2. Your Western Digital External HD is not made for Win 98. mainly its not compatiable meaning your system requirements have to be higher. I do believe you have to have Win 2000/XP to run that.

so your best bet to use it would be reinstall XP and reformat your harddrive and make sure your programs are not leaking to much memory. or you could just upgrade your ram to help with proformance issuses.

Your computer freezing and jamming wasnt caused by your external hard drive. By removing XP from your machine, now you've created yourself a ton of new problems and issues that will be next to impossible to solve, as Microsoft has dropped Windows 98 from their line of systems and will no longer furnish you with any drivers, updates or solutions for your problems. When Windows 98 was introduced, external hard drives weren't readily available to the public. Naturally, they're will be no drivers provided that will help you. My advice to you would be to re-install your Windows XP Home or Professional OS which will provide you with the necessary software and drivers solutions. If I can help in any way, dont hesitate to call on me, I'll be happy to help in any way I can. Thanks for the great question and for participating in Yahoo's Q & A. Larry RadioShack 01-9590

Windows 98 is notoriously bad at handling USB devices, you need to reinstall Windows XP, you probably just had a virus and XP will work if you reinstall it. Reinstalling will get rid of just about any kind of virus that XP can get.
