Heh...folks don't seem to get the gist of your question. You don't say you can't take anything except oxygen or water...rather that you can't take both of them, among whatever supplies you would need to set up shop there.

And in that case, the answer is easy. You take water...then you use the power source you also take with you to separate the water into oxygen and hydrogen...providing both air to breathe and fuel to burn.

The first part of AZ's answer is right, but I disagree about the water. I'd take oxygen. Many scientists think there is a good chance that there is water on the moon frozen underground or in the shadows of craters near the poles. No one thinks there is much oxygen on the moon. If there is any atmosphere on the moon, it is mainly rocket exhaust from US ships returning from the moon and by now that has probably dissipated.

I'd take the water.
With the right electrical equipment I could split the water into hydrogen and oxygen. And with enough power I can bake hydrogen and oxygen out of the rocks to make air to breathe and to make more water.

Not Me, I'd take some burning bush of Hemp..Most people smoking this bush in the past 50 to 60 years reported seeing U.F.O's as a side effect more then 3 times a day. They also reported this while traveling in a disc space ship in a Imaginary Universe of relative pressure. Because in a Universe of relative pressure of space, the odds will be more likely to contain E.T. life forms cause then molecules could bond more with elements to form them !... The human mind is a terrible thing to waste, Keep the bush in the ground and out of your head...

I would choose oxygen because then I could live long enough to look back at Earth and see what God created from his point of view. With water, you wouldn't even be able to leave your shuttle. So what good would it be?

Water! It contains both oxygen and hydrogen. You can drink it, split it and breath the O2 and use the hydrogen as fuel.

I'd take water. Without oxygen I'd be dead within minutes. Without water I'd die slowly in a week or so.

Well if I would have *nothing* other than water or oxygen, then it really doesn't matter. Standing naked on the moon will kill you far quicker than dehydration or asphyxiation.

Water because you can make oxygen out of it. This is how they make air on nuclear submarines.
