Spray with a stain remover like Shout and let it sit for 1-7 days. The longer the better. Then launder as usual and hang or lie flat to dry. Putting it in the dryer will set the stain even more. Repeat the procedure if any of the stain remains.

When I have stains like that they're usually cooking oil or some sort of grease. I've had pretty good luck by just applying straight dishwashing liquid to the stain (like DAWN not the stuff you put in a washing machine!) After it's sat for 5 minutes or so I put it in the washing machine and quite often it'll come out. If that doesn't work they sell this fantastic stuff called "Goop" in the automotive department of most stores. It is cheap, gentle on hands, and is lethal to stains. I've even gotten makeup out of carpeting with it. I actually got tomato sauce out of my white wool berber rug the other day with it! It is very cheap too. I pay 1.00 for a nice sized tub of it. It's a hand cleaner but explains it's laundry uses on the back.

The best stuff I have found to get those stains out is afta. You can get it at Home Depot with the carpet cleaners. It is actually an adhesive remover but one of the guys who work there told me about it and I have been hooked ever since.... Who would of thunk it? :)
