I'm a pack rat and when someone mentions throwing something of mine away, my excuses are:
"I can't throw that away, it means to much to me"
"I can't throw that away, I've had it forever, I'd be lost without it now"
"Can't throw that away, what if I need later??"
"Can't throw the books away, what if I want to read them again?"
"I'm not throwing it away because it's mine, Do I go through your stuff and say you should throw it away?"
And the list could go on. lol Anything to keep my stuff. Even though my husband will throw it out on me when I'm sleeping or gone anyway. :/

My Mom was a packrat . used to drive Dad nutty. She passed away last April and we are still finding stuff. At first it was the normal clothes (about 25 bags full) then shoes.( 20 pairs or more) but then it was stuff from my childhood, my brother's childhood, her childhood. Then there was the stuff she brought to her house that belonged to her Mom. We are all amazed at the stuff she 'saved' I really don't think she gave anything away ever!!
Some say that depression children saved because you never might get it again. Things were so severally sparse.
Though my daughter is like this and she is just too lazy to get in there and get it done. I helped her clean her garage and it looked great, within a year it was piled up high again.. for her there is no excuse.

Someday this old dried stepped on raisin, piece of red crayon, button from my coat, and vitamin tablet that I meant to take will be very valuable some day.
If I don't throw them away, I won't have to buy them later
I'll find what this goes with later so I better not throw them out.
When I get the rest, I'll have a complete set.
I can fix this when I get the time.
This must be something to somebody. I'll have it when they say they lost it.

A packrat would probably say: " I had better keep this because I might find a use for it someday".
