I went back when I was forty. While I can speak a little Japanese, German, Korean, Russian, and a few others I couldn't for the life of me, get either French or Spanish, nor could I handle calculus or basic chemistry. This REALLY shot my self-esteem in the foot and consequently made it impossible for me to attain my goal. The kids (even my own), thought I was both nutz and somewhat stupid.
Te answer to yourquestion is, they've not experienced enough in life to understand and grasp the BIG picture. The world for them, still pretty much revolves around them and is purely for their entertainment an folly.

Not everyone has to start with basic classes, and everyone has different strengths. I am the oldest person in a lot of my classes because I took over ten years off and have a family. When I look around, I feel like the younger people don't understand a lot about everything in life. When you are older, you have more drive to succeed, put more into it, expect more of yourself, and have seen more of life. Also, I feel like a lot of the kids in my classes will be in the same boat I am. The way they are going, they won't finish, either, and will have to come back. Keep your chin up! What they think shouldn't matter to you, and think of what you will have accomplished when you are done! Good Luck!

I'm young and I know that because I have to wait I'll have to start at the basics. Not everyone can afford to go straight out of high school, so it can be very frustrating because its nice to keep a little hope alive that you'll still be as good as you were, even if its not going to happen. It can be a real self-esteem low so some of us focus on the positive until we get there and reality sinks in.

Because they assume teachers were telling the truth when they said we'd use algebra on a daily basis as adults :) They figure we've been using math such as x = 7y+3 -5 on a regular basis and should be ready for calculus after 20 years with no school.

I hate it when adults generalize like they have forgotten that no two students are the same. Shouldn't the things that you have already learned in school and then practiced in life still be fresh on you mind it would seem logical. And young people are not douche bags in fact adults should not be saying or writing anything like that. grow up it's about time.

I understand that. I'm sorry you've had to deal with young people who can't seem to grasp that concept, it must be frustrating for you! Anyways, don't worry about them and keep at it.

as a young person myself i believe that most young people have spent the majority of their lives learning and when i look back i see how much more i have learned with time and i think most young people just expect that to continue and so are surprised when an older person knows less than them
