You should remove norton first. They have a free tool to do this for you.

It is very simple just a few clicks.

You DO NOT have to uninstall Norton first, but you MUST permanently disable it's resident protection before you install any additional anti-virus software. This is true for any anti-virus software.
If you run more than one anti-virus software on your computer, having two or more with active resident protection can cause conflicts between them and possibly crash your computer and/or other problems as well. Install all the anti-virus programs that you want on your system, BUT only have one at a time with active resident protection. If you wish to switch which one has the active resident shield, switch off the active one first, then activate the other one.
Norton has very good anti-virus protection, but their software uses way too much system resources and they charge a fee for auto updates. The last time that I used Norton anti-virus, I could manually update the virus definitions. I believe that this is still the case, but someone please let us know if Norton no longer allows this.
So, you CAN leave Norton on your system if you wish to have it available. You will have to pertinently turn off the active resident shield, and perhaps stop Norton anti-virus from running on system start (that will free up some system resources). Even with no active resident shield and not running on system start, because Norton is still installed on your system, it will be available for "on demand" scanning.
On demand scanning means "right clicking" on a folder, file, or files and choosing "scan with (insert anti-virus program name here)" from the menu that pops up. Different anti-virus programs may word their menu entry slightly different.
Of the freeware anti-virus programs available, AVG and Avast are two of the most popular because they include resident shields and they are typically very accurate. Avast includes more shields than just anti-virus, unlike AVG. However, I have noticed better anti-virus accuracy from AVG. Avast requires you to re-register every year, AVG does not.

Download the Avast software, then uninstall Norton and install Avast.
I haven't used avast in a long time, but if I remember it correctly, during the setup if you have another anti virus running it will tell you to remove it before continuing.

you need to uninstall norton before you install avast,to do this go to start>control panel>add/remove programs>and remove all entries for norton anti-virus,a restart will be required to complete uninstallation
avast is very easy to install,it needs to be registered free within 60 days but will run in demo mode until then,to register use the link in the program
whatever you do ,dont use avast while you still have norton on your hard drive(registered or not)as any more than one anti-virus on a p.c can cause serious problems and in certain senario,s can fatally crash your p.c(to such a extent that you would need to format your drive and reinstall your operating system)
good luck

Yes you do. Norton is a good program but you have to pay about $100 per year. You can find some freeware security products on the internet. On my computer, I have avast and spybot search and destroy. All are found on download.com

Its a good idea to uninstall Norton due to the fact that some other antivirus softwares do not cooperate with previous versions of antivirus software.

Hi,
The best thing to do is to Un-install Nortons now and install "AVG" free home version with free Updates instead, it's the best around and has never let me down. This will help you.
