It does and sometimes it does not, you really have to know the person before you can decide if their choice of music meets their personality.

I love to listen to romantice music and for reason that I am a romantic at heart. In my case, my choice of music relates to who I am but it many cases, it is not so.

You can just never really tell.

I believe music can offer insight to a person, but it does not always reveal something about them. For instance:

I listen mainly to Christian Rock.
I listen to it because I am a Christian and I admire the talent required to be in a rock band.

But occasionally I enjoy listening to other music like latin, opera, rap, pop, even soundtracks, techno, and jazz/big band music.

So yes music does offer insight to a person, but I'm not completely convinced that it can define a personality.

There is no music that I hate. This is because I think all music takes talent from SOMEONE. That someone could be the person altering a singer's voice but they still need talent. So how does that reveal my personality to you?

that's a tough question to answer simply. I have a friend that listens to Gwar. Hes one of the nicest guys you'll could ever meet. and only his closest friends are aware of his sick sense of humor. He mostly listens to reggae and rock

The stuff I like is pretty much rock and everything else but jazz

It may have less to do with the type of music, and more to do with the general lyrics. For example, you could probably guess that someone who listens to country music is patriotic (and by extension probably very religious and specifically Christian), can get ticked off very easily if you go against either his God or country. Or they are depressed, maybe both. That is because nearly every country song out there either deals with patriotism (which is always associated in America with religion as well--considered part and parcel of the "values" of middle America) or with someone who just went through a nasty breakup.

On the other hand, because the vast majority of rock deals with a problem with authority figures, you can guess that the vast majority of listeners to rock are more against supporting the government. They also tend to be young, so they are against a war in Iraq (mostly because they know they'll be the ones fighting it).

Someone who listens to rap generally feels that society has taken advantage of them. I could go on and on.

Essentially you will find that certain kinds of music also tend to focus on the same subject. Pop will always deal with either falling in or out of love, rap will always deal with trying to survive on the mean streets of the ghetto, rock with disobeying authority and so on. And because it always happens that we will gravitate toward those who "confirm" what we believe already, you can usually guess what they are thinking and feeling based on the type of music.

I like classical music. Of all the types, it is the most versatile music form. You can usually find pieces that suggest new love or broken hearts, anger, danger, joy, peace, reflection, etc. So it is the most likely form to help me with any emotion I have; and considering my emotional nature, that is a good thing.

Rap and country I don't like. Rap has its moments, but it is very limited in scope in terms of emotions (basically only anger and arrogance). I certainly feel the anger at times myself, but I don't like to feel it all the time. Country is depressing for the most part. But when it deals with patriotism, it just comes across as blind following of the leader solely because he is the leader of America and for no other reason. If you want to believe in America and its leaders, by all means do so; but don't do so blindly. Get across if at all possible what they do for you.
