Here is an article on breeding bettas. It's just a short walkthrough. If you want a very detailed explanation just do a search for betta breeding, this stuff is all over the net.

After 20 years of breeding bettas, I can tell you you are infor a fall if you don't seperate them as soon as possible. Eventually that male is going to get frustrated enough to kill one of the females and the other will die very shortly thereafter. Betta breeding is fun and rewarding, but it's something you really need to be prepared to do well in advance of putting the fish together. If you and your kids are interested in breeding fish might I suggest guppies, mollies or platys for a first time run through? Let them gain experience in maintaining young fish and the tank before jumping into something as complex as betta breeding. Not to say it's hard, just that some experience in fish keeping is really needed. Hope this helps.

What do you mean by "play"?
If the male is chasing the female, that's not playing, it's fighting.
They will only mate when the male is receptive. He will build a bubble nest. Then they mate, and the male will once again not tolerate the female. Also, when the fry hatch, he will eat them.
Breeding betta's is not uncomplicated.

I have a male betta and three females together and the male is just so mellow, he doesn't care about babies. Maybe your male is too old to mate. Some stores sell them when they're older cuz their fins are bigger and people want large fins on their betta.

Unless they are ready to breed (male is making bubble nests), never keep other bettas, male or female, with another male betta. He will eventually kill them both. To get them to mate, you will have to have the water conditions right. No ammonia or nitrite.

They don't fight!. I know this is your question but they don't?
Oh yeah, they probably aren't because they're not properly introduce. and because there's another fish. Try this site.
