I'm sure your fish would love the room. one thing I haven't seen anyone else here address is what type of algae eater you have. If he's an otocinclus (oto catfish) or plecostomous (pleco), they should get along well - but depending on the type of pleco, you may need a bigger tank yet - some will grow to 18", which is too large to a 20 gallon.
If your algae eater is a Chinese algae eater (or a "golden" if they're yellow-albino in color), I suggest replacing him with a more peaceful species. These don't eat algae all that much, and as they mature, will develop a taste for the slime coat of other fish. This often harrasses the fish to the point of killing it.
Good luck with the Betta - hope he enjoys being able to move around!

20gallon, wow. you sure can, but you know he doesn't have to be by himself, you can add other tropical fish.
the only thing you need to watch for in the 20galon is that the flow from the filter doens't create too much of a current for the betta.
as for tank mates if you'd like some, here is what I recommend:
4 cory cats
3 mollies
3platies
as for the algae eater, what kind is it?

I've had bettas all my life too, by the way, it's beTTa not beTa. they are NOT happier in smaller containers, there is no reasoning behind this, just a few stupid myths. and they certainly aren't happier the more depressed they look. I have 14 bettas right now, 7females together in a 15gallon tank and 7males in individual 3gallon tanks with filters and heaters.

Of course, you can do that. They'll be fine all you need to do though is make sure that you do get a filterd tank and plabts as well. The algae eaters are very peaceful in nature bettas will only fight among themselves and other fish with big fins that are showy so you'll be fine. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I bought recently a tank myself but the salesman at Petland just told me never to put two males together, so I ended up buying two females. At first , the male Betta was chasing both of them (he had been all alone in the tank and suddenly was sharing his space) but then he got friendly and now, the 3 of them are always playing. Let me also tell you, I bought a book in the store about Bettas. Not only are they cute but lead an interesting life. Good luck!

He will not fight with the algae eater, and a heater is a good idea with bettas, although most people do not use them.
I would put him in the larger tank. Just make sure you acclimate him to the new water temperature.

I have had bettas all my life and let me tell you they DEFINITELY DO NOT like large tanks, in fact the more depressed they look, the happier they are. Weird huh? Also, the more spread out the fins on your betta, the more stressed out and scared the fish is. If his fins are down and not doing anything, they are relaxed, comfortable and well taken care of. All i can equate it to is what does a wild animal do when it feels thretened? It spreads its body parts out as much as possible to make it appear larger. That is what the betta is doing; trying to make itself look larger because it feels threatened by the bigger tank. Look I am currently in collage taking many courses to become a marine biologist. Kaylie, all I would like to say is that I have read your profile and you consider yourself a "betta expert" if you really were you would know that bettas hate being in larger tanks. I have only answered questions on fish because I know a lot about them. And yes, if you think about it the logic behinde my reasoning is very clear and understandable. If you ask anyone who knows a lot about fish than I am certain you will get the same answer. But lastly, I repeat myself, DO NOT PUT A BETA FISH IN A TANK THAT IS 1 GALLON OR OVER!!!!-Thank you

No i think the 20 gallon is WAY too big. I put my betta in a 2 gallon one and he was really happy.Try not to put him with other animals.Bettas are called"Fighting Fish"so dont mix him with the others because he can get really stressed and he might die.
