There are a number of people who have declared for each of the 2 major parties. There are probably some third party candidates as well, but most of the country doesn't care enough for them to make news. The actual candidates on the ballot in Nov. 2008 will not be decided until the primaries held in early 2008. That means we have at least a year before the major party candidates are officially chosen.

There are many candidates, and more pouring in all the time. But if you're wondering who will be on the ballot in November 08', not yet. The primaries have to take place first.

Someone is a candidate as soon as they say they are a candidate, and remain a candidate until they drop out.

The only time someone is a "confirmed" candidate is when their name is on a ballot. Other than that, the term is meaningless.
