In 99.9% of desktop machines it will be possible to put your new drive in there as an extra. You do not need to replace your old drive so it becomes a very quick and easy job. If it's a laptop then you need to back up your data to CD/DVD or pocket drive, then put your new HDD in and start re-building.

When you put in the new harddrive, you'll need (probably, some brackets if the case doesn't have the space) and an IDE cable (unless its a SATA harddrive) and to set the new harddrive as a 'slave'. Then, you can just move your "my pictures/video/music/whatever" to the new harddrive and reroute the programs to read and save to those folders and you won't have to worry about doing anything with the operating system.
