Last year I moved in with my best friend into a rental house. We split all the bills 50/50, including the deposits on the house & our utilities. She would usually go pay the bills, then I would write her a check for my half. We grew apart after a few months but stayed @ the house and finished out our 1 yr. lease. The last month we lived there (Jan. 07) she refused to tell me how much the bills were & hid them so I couldn't even see them. Finally she told me that we would just split the deposits when we got them & then I would pay her the difference of what I owed her. After we moved out, I found out that the deposit for the water bill (which was in my name only) had been sent to her address. It is now March, and she says that she took it b/c she didn't think I was going to pay her (even though I signed a paper saying I would pay her when she sent me my check). She gave me copies of all the bills I owed her for & said I couldn't have my check until I paid her. What should I do?

call the water company and inform them that you have not recieved your refund of deposit yet. dont even mention her at all to them. they will research it and issue you a new check, and it may involove her getting in trouble for fraud if she cashed it.

First you need to send her a letter stating what it is you believe that you deserve and attempt to resolve the situation. If she refuses or does not respond sue her in small claims court. Make sure you have all your proof and witnesses with you when your date comes up.

People learn from their mistakes, hopefully you don't make the same mistake next time.

Trust is not an option.

The only person I trust is myself.
