when I have to go through that certian part of town (which isn't very often thank God), I always see they leave junk in thier front yards. Like busted up old toys, candy wrappers, stolen bicycles, empty beer bottle, etc... It looks horrible. If they had more respect for themselves, they'd get more respect from us!

It is a matter of self-respect and loss of hope, mixed with drugs and booze, more often than not.

Their are different reasons. These are some I am personally aware of:

It is true some people are busy. Cleaning up a non-dangerous eyesore is a lower priority than making sure the kids take a bath.
After it has sat for a while some people just stop seeing it. It was not a priority then, so it is even less important now that it has been sitting. I once had a roommate who honestly claimed that she had forgotten about the moldy bowl that was right next to the head of her bed. She actually said "Oh, I forgot that was there," when I forced her to search for dirty dishes in her room.

Part of it is cultural. If you grow up in an environment where it is normal to leave garbage lying around, you will learn that it is normal.
I have been known to leave tools and bicycles our in the yard for months before cleaning them up (very "redneck"). I think to myself that if they get ruined it is my own fault, and I can leave them there if I choose. Other roommates and neighbors however may not agree with me; my neglect can look like someone else's eyesore.

I might get defensive about storing junk in MY space/yard, but then it still bothers me when people leave garbage all over the place. I was not taught to be neat, but I was also not allowed to wallow in filth either.

Maybe they have kids that love the busted up old toys, and refuse to get rid of them. Kids also leave their bikes outside, where they're not supposed too. I remember when I used to leave my stuff in the yard, my parents would just leave it out there that way if it got stolen or ruined it was my fault. Maybe it stays out there to teach the kids a lesson, you never know.
And don't just assume a bike is stolen because of the part of town someone lives in. With remarks like you made, and the way you look down on people and think that appearance means everything... that's what's wrong with the world. And you don't know if they respect themselves or not. Maybe they have different kind of respect for themselves that doesn't have anything to do with the appearance of their yard... Maybe they respect themselves because they know they're not as shallow as you are.

This would be a good question for Jeff Foxworthy on Blue Collar TV. He could have a Front Yard of the Week contest instead of a Back Yard contest

Where I live, that "certain part of town" is anywhere, USA.

If you are referring to a race of people, I will tell you right now, that the poor white trash are the worst. I am poor and white.
Sometimes people leave things in THEIR yard because the trash people won't pick them up. I guess I am not quite as familiar with that "certain part of town"as you are.

I don't have a yard like that...nor do I have to drive through "that certain part of town", as you put it. Nor do I judge them because of their YARD.

Do you think that maybe they're too busy to worry about the yard? Maybe they have to worry about working 60 hours a week at a minimum wage job just to get food on the table.

I'm sure they have loads of self respect. And I'm also sure they don't care if people like you respect them or not. I know I wouldn't.

I'm sure it's learned behavior. If you are raised not to care about junk in the yard, value systems are going to be different.
