ok i have a compaq s6500nx i need my stuff off the hardrive(the comp is not working)the drive is a ata i think thats what it is & on my new comp the drives is sata i see it 16 pin hookup but goes to the dvd drive can i hook it up to that & get my files or just use it in there......thx

hook old drive into new machine as another slave device. Then you can retrieve file if drive not dead.

just use the DVD drives cables for the HDD, it will work just fine. Just make sure u plug the dvd drive up after u finish with copy.

If your asking can you put your IDE connected hard drive on the same connector as your DVD drive then the answer is yes, just check your master/slave/CS jumpers on the drives.
