It can be caused by straining, heavy lifting, coughing, etc
It is much like a bruise except the skin over it is clear so you can see the progression of it going away - just like a bruise goes through stages. There is no treatment, it just dissolves with time and you may see it spread down because of gravity.

o that happened to my sister. What you do is NOTHING. in about a week it will heal itself. You can burst a blood vessel in your eye by simply sneezing. just leave it alone.

You get red lines in the white of your eye. Its pretty normal and should go away in 2 or 3 days.
