Because of St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland, and the proud heritage of many Irish people all over the world.
One traditional icon of the day is the shamrock. And this stems from a more bona fide Irish tale that tells how Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day.
The St. Patrick's Day custom came to America in 1737. That was the first year St. Patrick's Day was publicly celebrated in this country, in Boston.
Today, people celebrate the day with parades, wearing of the green, and drinking beer. One reason St. Patrick's Day might have become so popular is that it takes place just a few days before the first day of spring. One might say it has become the first green of spring.

st patrick is the patron saint of ireland, if you are catholic in any nation you would celebrate the day as a saints day. as for the other goings on.................the irish spread throughout the world when the potato famine hit ireland in the 1800s,many left for survival-this explains why you see the celebration throughout the world, the first st patricks day parade was held in america. the irish at first were treated worse than the black slaves, with undaunting pride we worked our way up and conquered as always the struggle.
the day is a day to be proud to be irish but primarily to celebrate our patron saint, many attend mass on this day.
shamrocks- st patrick is attributed for bringing christianity to ireland, christianity was already in ireland but st patrick was a strong and influental leader,he used the shamrock to represent the holy trinity.
snakes- ireland has never had snakes due to our climate, the snakes are said to represent evil and hence st patrick is attributed from driving paganism/evil from ireland.
hope this helps.

For the same reason we have MLK Day and Columbus Day. Lobbying by ethnic groups seeking to improve their status within the larger society.
