It is a theory that a baby is crying non-stop for no apparent reason. If it appears in a child, it could between 6 weeks to 3 months.
However, some pediatricians, like Harvy Karp, believe it is not something that actually exists. They believe that if babies are cared for a certain way from the beginning of their lives outside of the womb, colic will never exist. Others believe "colic" is possibly caused by acidic reflux. My son had this, and, luckily, I realized something was wrong right when it began. He is now much calmer and happier with the medicine needed.

Colic is a term to describe babies who cry more than usual for no identifiable reason. It's not a disease, just a term.
Colic can be very frustrating, but passes in time. Keep the baby close, be loving, swadle the child, maybe even keep a journal of when the baby cries excessively, what was going on at that time, etc. This could show you a pattern you were otherwise unaware of. If it ever gets to be too much, call your doctor, a friend, anyone. They can help you take your own 'time out.'

Colic is when the baby is very gassy, sometimes nothing will sooth them, they just cry all the time. My last child had this and the only way he would settle down was if I ran the vaccum, I would run the vaccum three or four times a day. Eventually we moved on to a bouncy seat that vibrated and played music, but it would only work if I put him on the kitchen table in it. If I sat him in it on the floor he would still cry. you can also purchase Mylacon Drops they work well too

It's when a baby cries for 4 or more hrs at a time about 3 or more days a wk without obvious reason: ex: diaper is changed, is not hungry, no tummy ache, not sleepy, etc...
It can start at about 6 wks of age and usually dissipates at about 3 months of age. It usually occurs in the evening time and sometimes lasts all night. There are websites that are very informative and that even offer support for parents who are dealing with this. Extensive study is being done to find out more about this frustrating, but common condition.

I had collic for 9 months when I was a baby and doctors thought it was from poor digestion in my body. I was constantly throwing up and crying nonstop. The stress from the crying caused me to have ulcers later when I was a bit older at about 5 or 6. My mom said that she always carried me around with her in a kangaroo pouch making sure I was always near her for comfort... Not much else there is to do.
