Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done.
You can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com
Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:
1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.
2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!

Big Nose Bird Recommend this Site http://bignosebird.com/carchive/birdcast.shtml
CGI Resource Index http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html
3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.
If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com's "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day." http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm
4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.
Here is a comprehensive list of where to submit your articles http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AhzreGmnCUicOoyedqypscUjzKIX?qid=1006022407481
6. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:
Craigslist http://www.craigslist.com
Google Base http://base.google.com
Classifieds for Free http://www.classifiedsforfree.com/...
Text Link Exchange http://www.txtswap.com/

If so, how is your
traffic? Even if your traffic is relatively good, there is
still a chance that you want it to be better than it is. That
is why you may be looking for new ways to market your website
to the general public. If that is the case, you may be pleased
to know that there are a number of different steps that you can
take. These steps are often referred to as online marketing
tactics. If properly executed, online marketing tactics are a
great way to generate “buzz,” about your online website; thus,
likely, increasing the amount of traffic that it sees.
When it comes to online marketing tactics, one of the most
important tactics that you need to know is search engine
optimization, which is often referred to as SEO. SEO is
important when trying to achieve a high search engine ranking.
Since a large number of internet users find what they are
looking for by performing a standard internet search, you need
to have your website displayed in those results. It is best if
you achieve a top 10 search engine ranking; however, a top 20
search engine ranking may still provide decent results. In all
honesty, it is better to think big; therefore, you should aim
for a top 10 search engine ranking.
In addition to search engine optimization, SEO, you can also
use press releases to get the word out about your online
website or business. Press releases are best if they are used
to provide new information, but, in all honesty, you really
don’t need to a reason to create a press release. However, if
you are starting a new website or adding a new service to your
current one, you are advised create and distribute a press
release. A press release is a great way to generate “buzz,”
about your online website.
Although SEO and press releases are considered the two most
important internet marketing tactics that you need to know,
there are other online marketing tactics that you can benefit
from trying. One of those tactics is by developing a
newsletter. On your online website, you can have a quick signup
form where internet users can signup for your newsletter. Now,
you have complete control over your newsletter, but it is
advised that make the content relevant to your online website
or business, in one way or another. You can also choose to
offer your newsletter as much or as little as you want to.
There are some website owners who send out weekly newsletters
and others who send them out monthly or even quarterly; the
decision is yours to make.
Another online marketing tactic that you should look into
involves participating in a pay per click advertising program.
These programs, which are offered by Google and Yahoo! are
great ways to generate interest in your online website or
business. What is nice about pay per click advertising is that
you do not have to waste your money on advertising that may not
be helping to increase your online traffic. With pay per click
advertising, you only need to pay for your advertisements if an
internet user clicks on your ads. In addition to joining a pay
per click program, it might also be a good idea to do a banner
or a link exchange with other webmasters. This is a great way
to promote your business for free; however, you want to be
cautious when doing a banner or link exchange with your
competition.
The above mentioned online marketing tactics are just a few of
the many that exist. Just a few of the other marketing tactics
that you can use to increase the popularity of your website
include starting an affiliate program, offering free samples or
discounts if you are selling a product or a service, or adding
your website link to the bottom of your all of your emails,
like a signature. Whether you implement one of above mentioned
online marketing tactics or a number of them, you are sure to
see an increase in traffic. If you operate an online business,
your increase in traffic may help to generate sales for your
business; thus increasing your profits.
In addition to implementing the above mentioned steps yourself,
you may want to think about acquiring the services of a
professional. When seeking professional assistance, it may be a
good idea to approach an internet marketing firm that
specializes in SEO, such as SmokeDog.net. You will find that
these particular internet marketing firms offer you the most
services for a reasonable price.
...all the best.

Small Business Marketing Strategy: Target the up-and-coming search engines
While Google still rules the roost when it comes to Internet search engines, and Yahoo is firmly entrenched in second spot, a number of new start-ups are hoping to give them a run for their money. And a good small business marketing strategy would be to check them out and see how you can make them work for your site!
Some of the new up-and-comers include:
Powerset : ( www.powerset.com ) A "natural language" search engine
Hakia : ( www.hakia.com ) A "meaning-based" search engine
Wikia : ( www.wikia.com ) A "community-based" search engine
ChaCha : ( www.chacha.com ) A "social networking-based" search engine
Snap : ( www.snap.com ) A search engine that offers visual previews
It's a smart small business marketing strategy to continue optimizing for the Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engines as they are by far and away the most popular -- but niche search engines could provide new opportunities to reach your market. Be sure to check them out!

Hi,
You don't want just traffic, you want targeted traffic.
SEO or Search Marketing is critical for the success of your web site. Without it, you will get no traffic. No traffic = no customers = no money.
If you own a Web site, the Web site building software should have included SEO. Otherwise, using the software is a waste of time. SEO includes Internet marketing and while articles posting, etc. is important, the most important thing is to select the right keywords that people use to find your Web site. You need to do keyword analysis to find the best keywords for your Web site.
Then, you need to sprinkle those keywords onto your Web pages so that the search engines will find them as their spiders crawl your Web site as well as putting them in your Title, Keywords, headings and description.
Why? Think about how the major search engines work. They key on what word or phrases the users enter. How do you find keywords that users want? Use Google itself at this URL:
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Just enter your keyword and it will tell you what the demand is for that keyword and how much it would cost to advertise it on Google via Google AdWords.
Supply and demand is important for keywords. You want to find the keywords with a huge demand, but very little supply.
Another good keyword analyzer is Wordtracker.com. This will cost you money, but it's the best on the Web.
This is a very good book for building traffic: Search Engine Optimzation - An Hour A Day by Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin.
With this book you do not need any costly SEO services.
There are Web site builders that do most of this SEO for you. Most free web site builders do not include SEO. That's why most of them are a waste of time. Creating a Web site is easy, but it is only 10% of the job. The other 90% is SEO and it is critically important.
Do you know about Alexa rank? Alexa is an Amazon company that ranks Web sites. It takes the most active Web site which total about 65 million and compares your web site to all of them. Here is how to get to the Alexa Point Test:.http://traffic-test.sitesell.com/waltera1.html
If you have a rank under 500,000 you are doing good, it you are under 100,000 you are fantastic. Google is under 10.
The Web sites that score high on Alexa have lots of content. Content is king on the Internet. What is content? Its information, information that visitors find interesting and relevant to your keywords. The more pages you have on your Web site, the better. If you have only 5 or 6 pages, the search engines will ignore you. Once you get to about 30 pages, the search engines will begin to take notice. At that time you should begin to link to other Web sites. The search engines love links, but you must avoid link farms.
Trying to game the search engines is a thankless task. They have computer science PHds developing their search engine spiders. Do you think you can compete with them? Not likely.
Sneaky techniques are called "black hat" optimization. Won't work. The SEs are changing constantly. You cannot find out what they do or how they do it. When someone finds a crack, they seal it up.
Linking is important. SEs love links.
Work hard to create more useful sites. Get great software for building web sites. One that does SEO for you.
The best way to get more traffic is to have lots of pages, 100s of them, thousands are better, with relevant content (information). SEs love quality content.
If you have the right Site Build it software, the software submits to search engines automatically.
How did you build your Web site? I hope it wasn't one of those free web builder sites.
You see, there are lots of Web sites that will build a Web site for you. That's where they end. Building a Web site as you probably know is only solving 5% of the puzzle. The other 95% is search engine optimization and internet marketing. Most Web Site Build It software will only do the first 5%, then they nickel and dime you to death with add-ons that purport to do SEO and internet marketing. Unfortunately most of them are scams.
So what is one to do if there is no help from your Web site building software. Do you know about NVU? This is a free web site builder that emuilates Microsofts Front Page and did I mention that it's FREE. Go here to download: http://www.nvu.com/index.php
Get better software for Site Building. One that has some keyword analysis. Getting search engines to spider your Web site depends on your keyword selection.
Listen! The SEs find Web site by searching for keywords. If a Web site has the right keywords or phrases, the SEs will find it and send you to the front of the class.
But how do you know which keywords are the best. Ahhh! That's the question and I will give you a web site that does keyword analysis and it's free.
The Google AdWords Keyword Tool is an excellent preliminary brainstorming tool. Let's say that you have ten ideas for a theme or Site Concept. This tool gives you a superb "high level snapshot" of how profitable each of your Site Concept possibilities might be. Here's the URL: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal - remember, it's free
Here's a book you might find helpful: Increase Your Web Traffic In A Weekend by Jerry Lee Ford, Jr and William R Stanek.
Kindest Personal Regards,

You need to build inbound links.
Most of the directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:
http://www.avivadirectory.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=kahmer
http://www.kahmer.com
http://www.joeant.com
The more inbound links to your site, the better you will rank
with Yahoo / Google / MSN.
Also work on your meta tags. Here is an
article on how they work: http://www.richkahmer.com/meta-tags.html
