For the drive take whatever toys you know will amuse your kid, and plenty of them. Make sure your car is in good working order as you will drive through some areas where they are little or no services like gas stations, repair shops, and rest areas. Take a cooler with plenty of ice and things to drink AND fruit and other snacks for your kid. Again, places to buy these are few and far between. When we have driven we bought lunch fixings and stopped at rest areas and made our own lunch.

Figure out how long you want to drive each day and make hotel reservations. You don't want to be looking for a place to stay when your kid is tired and hungry. Plus, the further west you go the harder it is to find motels; and they do book up early. If you cannot find a place your options are very limited.

When you get to Vegas the Circus Circus hotel at the north end of the Strip is the hotel for families with kids. Its full of arcade games and things for kids. Its gonna be really hot so take shorts and "t"'s and changes of clothes. Be sue to taek sun screen.

Yes, it will be hot and bright so have:
hat and light clothing and sunscreen
a cooler - freeze some of the water bottles ahead so ice doesn't take away room from the drinks. You can get more ice at the hotel.
Music/cds he will like to listen to
a pillow so he can nap, and a stick-on shade for the window (check at the auto accessories store or department) He will probably nap a lot on the ride.
Snacks like crackers, cookies or fruit rollups
Wet wipes, paper towels and a few bags to throw trash in (or to use as vomit bags if he gets carsick!)

Las vegas is at the hottest in July. Figure it will be around 110-115 degrees at that time! Make sure your cars airconditioning works well!!! SPF 30+, and WATER!!!!! Hopefully you will be staying somewhere with a pool and alot of shade!
Good Luck

that all depends on where youre coming from. get an atlas and look at your route. research some stops along the way. make it an adventure since he will be seeing things he never has. know your next destination and make him/her the navigator. look for signs so he can tell you how many more miles. the key word here is "adventure". good luck and have a safe trip

Gameboy. and lots of batteries. That's what I did and it was great. He played for a while, we played car games then he played more. and Gatorade. If it is as hot as i think it will be, the only thing you will get into your child is liquid ( and the ever fun stops at a roadside store for ice cream!)
