Also, for a triennial, do you have the same meeting members as you did when they first identified the student, even though the child was deemed ineligible for some related services after the identification? For example, the OT and the Speech language providers were at the initial, but over the three years the child no longer needed services. Do you bring them back in for the triennial to discuss the current identification? He continues to be eligible as an LD student. With the new mods to IDEIA, I am always checking back into the reqs but I can't seem to find any information on triennials. Thanks so much in advance for your answers! (SpEd Coordinators only, please!) If you can also possibly reference the clause, it would be great!

Yes, you can do both at the same time. You just have to make sure that you hold the meeting before the actural date of the IEP (you don't want to be out of compliance). Now, you can also waive all of the actual testing if all members of the team decide that the student still needs to receive special education services. As for related service providers, if they have terminated service for the student...then they have no need to be there. The only people who should be there at the 3 year re-evaluation are you,as the sped teacher and case manager, any other sped teachers, the students regular ed teachers of he has any, the parent, the student, the nurse if the student has any health problems and the psycologist. If the student is receiving any related service then them also. I really hope it helps. I know with all of the laws changing it gets kinds confusing. Good Luck

I am an SDC Teacher and a Case manager, my district does not have SpEd Coordinators although I know some districts in California have separate Program managers that fill that type of role. On to your question.

The triennial and the annual are names for the same meeting. The difference is that the triennial serves the additional purpose of determining that this student still qualifies for services and needs to be held once every three years counting from the initial qualification. If a student has been dismissed from certain services during one of the annual reviews then those specialist do not need to attend the triennial meeting. However, it may be determined that their input is needed and they can be in attendance. As for the reqs, they are dependent on your state interpretation of IDEA

Hope this helps,

My triennial meetings were always consolidated with the annual meetings when I was up for review. There were some services I was qualified for, and others I wasn't. The service providers who's services I wasn't qualified for did not attend my meetings.

I also did a research paper on special ed. services in the fall of 2001 for an American Government class I took in high school.

Does there have to be an annual iep every year, including the year of a triennial?
In other words, does the triennial stand as a separate meeting and does not serve as an annual?

you can do both at the same time, as long as you do them before the due date of the iep. in order for the student to be dismissed from a single service they must go through a test. and the speciallist must write a major report and must have an iep meeting where they inform everyone of their findings. after your first iep meeting you must have the whole team attending. however if one of the members of the school team arent present you must have an addemdum for the person not attending the prior meeting. also, you may have a written consent from the parent if she/he doesnt show, they may go ahead with the meeting. My girlfriend has been working with special ed.(teacher) for nearly 10 years.
