he might be having problems with his swim bladder. my goldfish started swimming funny when they were having swim bladder problems too, and a few hours later they died.
you should check the amount of ammonia and nitrates in the water to make sure the water quality is good. also make sure that each time you change the fish's water, put hte fish in a plastic bag filled with his old water and let him float in the bag in his tank filled with new water.
i've also heard that feeding fish a frozen pea will help with swim bladder problems too. good luck!

Sounds like it could be a swim bladder problem which is often caused by constipation.
It is often suggested that you feed a fish with this situation happening a pea. This acts as a laxative. However getting a sick fish to eat a pea can be difficult.
This method is the most simplest.
Place 1 teaspoon of Epsom Salts into 40 Gallons of water.
Epsom Salts is also a laxative and will not harm your fish.
Don't remove the fish from this mixture until it is swimming properly again.
I've saved my fish by using this procedure.

This is caused by a swim bladder problem. Swim bladder is a sack that the fish can fill water to help sink and empty to rise to the surface. If it becomes filled with air and the fish cannot get rid of it that is what happens. Cure? Really none.
Most of my fancy Golds got it at some point. I am looking at
one right now. My orange Oranda. Doing the same thing.

it really is termed Swim Bladder ailment. it really is a parasite and it should be treated. attempt a strong puppy shop and tell them your fish has swim bladder ailment and ask for the right antibiotic to administration it. There are some that say proper on the label that they are for that. stick with the instructions completely! Your fish should be cured, yet this may also come again. So once you come across the medicine for it, shop some more advantageous accessible. everybody at a strong puppy shop will be conscious of what it really is. it really is quite elementary -- pretty in goldfish, yet i don't be conscious of why.

He could just be resting in a funny position - mine sometimes do that. Otherwise, goldfish are prone to digestion problems (constipation) and occasionally need to eat things to help prevent this. Some people swear by feeding their goldfish peas, but I just go to the petstore and buy whole sun-dried baby shrimp (in a can just like flakes or food pellets). The shrimp are whole, with the shells and everything, so they help with the digestion. Just shake a few into the water. It may take the fish a few times to get used to eating them, but mine really love them now - they eat them once a week for prevention purposes.

I agree with others here, this does sound like a swim bladder problem. And you are correct here also, because the ability to take in and expel air is affected by their "odd" shape, as well as food and infection. These links have some recommendations for treatment:

Good luck with your goldfish - hope he gets better for you!

It is likely that it has swim bladder disease!! The swim bladder is responsible for balance in fish, hence why he is not swimming the right way!! It is likely he will die very shortly. Fish - when getting swim bladder disease - usually die as a result of not being able to feed properly or shock!!

He might ave swim bladder disease or constipation. How often do you feed him? How much. If you feed him more than 3 times a day in great quantities, then, it might be constipated. So fast him for a day and then feed him a cooked pea split in half. Do the smae for swim bladder disease to treat this.

The swim bladder problem is probably caused by constipation. Epsom salts will act as a laxative. You have to add one tablespoon of Epsom salts to each gallon of water. That should solve your problem. Do you have a forty gallon tank? You will have to add forty tablespoons of Epsom salts to the water if you have a forty gallon tank.
