My Polaris compass was placed in a box with magnets and has lost it's North. Is there any way to fix this?

Magnetize the pointer by placing a small U-shaped magnet so one end is at one pointer and the other end is at the other pointer. Even if the U magnet is a bit bigger than the compass, this should work. The only problem is if you also magnetize something in the case.

a car compass has compensators, these are small magenets that compensate for the distortion of the magnetic field by the metal and electrical wiring of the car. The damage you describe probably affected the compensators, and would now require complete dissasembly to restore all parts. You are money ahead to replace the unit with a new one.
