I mean those with no family connections or previous criminal enterprises...is it simply a case of one day deciding that life would be better 'on the dark side', or is it essential that you already have a large family to facilitate your rise to power?
Are there any documented cases of anyone doing this?

Fear and intimidation over people, weak people will follow the strong.
Get a few ''lackys'' behind them and its not hard to build up a reputation.
That and money [earned legally or not] usually helps keep them out of jails by paying for good lawyers/bribes on the way to the top.

You have to be willing to do anything to get to the top but it would be very risky so there probably weren't many
