I call this itinerary "India Heritage Tour" - I always start and end in Delhi (RT fares are cheaper for me from the US).
Delhi - India gate; Tughlakabad Fort; Qutub Minar; Raj Ghat; Red Fort - 3-4 days
train to Agra - Taj Mahal; Agra Fort; Fatehpur Sikri (finest example of Mughal architecture); Bharatpur Bird sanctuary -
4-5 days
fly to Khajuraho - temples; Raneh Falls - 2- 3 days
bus to Varanasi - palm reading maybe?
bus to Sarnath - a pilgrimage place( where Buddha delivered its sermon)
2-3 days in Varanasi/Sarnath
Then fly back to Delhi and home..........
Yes, travelling alone is okay...and yes, it's best if you book your hotels before you leave. What you would actually do in a particular city, you could pretty much wing it, but it's always nice to have a general outline of the places you want to go to. Have fun.........be safe.
Happy Travels!

You should go to Delhi. You can base yourself out of Delhi. You can easily get a hotel (unless it's around a big holiday). You can read some history books about Delhi before you go (books about the 7 or 8 old cities of Delhi) and then you can go and try to find all of the ruins all around Delhi (that aren't in any tour books)... that's pretty fun, I do that from time to time.
You can rent a car (or take a train, but if you're by yourself, it would probably be safer to rent a car with a driver)... and go to Jaipur for the day and look at all of the old historical landmarks and you can take a car and take another day trip to Agra to see the Taj and other historical landmarks there...
In Delhi you can see the oldest Mosque in India, the largest Mosque in India and some of the oldest historical landmarks.

history, culture, and architecture you say...
what history attracts you? british history should take you to kolkata and delhi. mogul history to delhi, agra, jaipur. south indian history to the temples of tamil nadu. colonial history to pondichery and goa.
i strongly dislike the whole jaipur tourist thing. if you like buildings, follow the hordes of tourists. but if you want to see common indian life, just get away from it.
golden palace in amristar is fantastic.
hampi is pretty cool.
check out lonely planet and indiamike.com for more details. and, i hate to say this (sorry all readers), don't ask the indians. they haven't travelled their own country as much as us westerners have, and thus they recommend stupid things like the beaches of mumbai as a highlight for a foreigner who has to fly half way around the world and has limited time.
