I did this drive about every weekend last fall semester. It took me two and a half hours from the south line of Kansas city to the middle of Springfield. I took 71 to 7 going through Clinton, mo down through 13. Since 13 is pretty much four lane now that's about the fastest route in my opinion. (and yes that is going about 10 miles over the speed limit)

It takes three and a half if you go by way of Joplin Mo. It takes 4 if you take your time and stop to relax say in Lamar Mo. at McDonnalds .So go down 71 to Joplin and go east i think its 40 or 44 . Nice trip I've done it severall times . Go mushroom hunting off the side of the hwy.
