Using "further" is even better than "farther," though both are acceptable as far as I know.

"I had to go a bit further THAN I thought."

Neither is correct. The phrase should read: " I had to go a bit farther than I thought."

more farther. I guess. I had to go a bit further then I thought would be the better way to say that sentence, though.

Neither, really. "More far" is acceptable grammatically, but it just sounds bad. I think you'll find it's hardly ever used. "More farther" is just plain incorrect.

The best answer is to use "farther" or "further" depending on context. They're almost interchangeable, but most grammarians say to use "farther" for distance and "further" for more metaphorical uses.

So in your statement, it should be "I had to go a bit farther than I thought" if you're talking about an actual distance, as in walking or driving, but "I had to go a bit further than I thought" if it's about, for example, making an effort. "To succeed in this job, I had to go a bit further than I thought."

you don't need more in front of farther. That is incorrect. The sentence would read "I had to go a bit farther than I thought."
