Could it be a problem to live in Ireland as a lesbian?
Do Irish people have problems with homosexuals?
Should I be careful with saying something about my sexual orientation? I mean, I am not a sister that proclaims lesbian life but I would like to feel free living in Ireland. By the way, I am speaking of the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland. Thanks a lot for helping me.

I am really shocked about Ireland. This could be a reason not to go there. I always thought Irish people are open-minded. I mean I am a human being.

From the people Ive met it seems to be ok I wouldn't worry about the whole Catholic Ireland thing that seems to be long gone. There is also fairly good legal protection if some one accosted you in the street or descriminated against you in work In places like Dublin, Cork or Galway things are pretty free and easy
Also the Irish population is quiet a diverse group at the moment lots of people of different nationalities so there is alot of different groups here at the moment. people don't care about things like that anymore. Of course there is also a possibility that you will meet some eegit (idiot). Don't be in your face about it an it will be fine.

The present generation of Irish have got thier act together with being able to behave the way they want. Discression might be used more in Eire, however most of my Catholic inlaws over there have illegitemate offspring despite thier Catholic upbringing. I imagine Catholocism will not prevent a person bing gay either, so what can they do. I do not know first hand of gay folk, but the Irish are simply humans like the rest of civilisation. Graham Norton I might add, had more problems with being proddy than with being homo. I had no problem being non Catholic in Dublin, but then I did not advertise the fact. As long as you are seen to drink Guiness, you should be accepted.

No matter where you are, being a lesbian will always attract problems from most people who aren't gay. As in any place of the world, when dealing with people you should be careful not to give away too much information if you want to live peacefully. There ARE however some places you should NOT ever say you're a lesbian, or they could actually kill you for that (in Texas, for example, it is against the law to be gay...).

I don't think you'd have any more problems there than in the US. Despite the fact that the Irish are predominantly Catholic, they are quite tolerant of homosexuality. Not saying you will never run into bigots, but on the whole they're very tolerant.

Well, on a fact-based level, it might be difficult.
Ireland is very proudly Catholic. Historically, they have been persecuted and treated cruelly by the English, who are proudly Protestant.
In light of this, Ireland can be pretty rough place to live if you are gay, since Catholicism frowns on homosexuality (as does the new Pope.)

Ireland is a VERY Catholic country and the Pope has condemned homosexuality. Despite that, you might be able to find places for "Free living" but it won't be easy
