i realise due to photosynthesis oxygen is given off which fish can breathe in but i need another reason aswell

Isn't oxygen a good enough reason? Cos it's the only one!
It also provides shelter and shade, but that isn't going to keep them alive.
Unless you have crocodiles in your tank.

It oxygenates the water and also provides a hiding place for the fish

The smaller fishes can hide in the weed so have a better chance of not being eaten.

Plus the fish eat the weed

Besides oxygen plants also take carbon-di-oxide which get reduce and the waste so formed is utilise by the plants as nitrates.
