What happens when a doctor taps you on the knee with his/her little hammer? The knee jerks in a reflex action unless you are consciously controlling the musculature to resist the impulse. Guess what happens when someone feels "verbally attacked?"

Whether you approach it in a "provocative" manner (must admit I'm not really sure what you're implying there, unless you just trying to say that your attack was very interesting) or any manner an attack is always going to provoke the same response from anyone who is not trained and practiced in the art of resisting negative reflexes.

You're going to get attacked back.

It's the knee-jerk reaction, but it is happening at an emotional level rather than a physical one. Most people don't even think about it. It is simply a reflex action; when they feel kicked emotionally they will kick back. A "you hurt me so I'm going to hurt you" reaction that is common in human relationships.

You want to get your point across? Then learn how to communicate in a non-aggressive manner and more and more people will actually want to hear what you have to say.

Absolutely not. It is degrading and puts up immediate barries..They will not listen to what you are saying. Well all the "normal" people I know would react that way. Have you not heard the saying "You attract more flies with honey than vinegar"
One can be firm and authoratative without being abusive. In my opinion it is never OK to verbally attack anyone.

Well, that all depends. I've been known to verbally attack people in the past--and I've seen that it only makes the person you attack hold on stronger to their principals--because they then feel this desperate need to defend themselves..Attacking people is good for politicians who are seeking to destroy their rivals, and that does work--but it is not a good tactic to use if you are sincerely trying to persuade someone to see your point of view. If you want to someone to see your point of view--its is best to listen to them, find common points that you both agree on, be nice and kind, and never fully admit that they are "wrong", just say that you fully understand their point then express your argument.

No, you only get known for being a d!ck when you verbally attack people---"provocatively" (what, are you wearing lace?) or not....

It truly is better to get your point across by being nice. Firm, but nice. I prefer to talk softly but carry a big stick full of whup-ace, that gets my point across.

Strife begets strife.

It worked fine for the Roman Legions.
