I would suggest the American president, Abraham Lincoln.
He was an almost-accidental holder of the office -- yet it's hard to imagine anyone else who could have held things together as valiantly as he did during the American Civil War. It was the country's most trying time over more than 200 years of history, and Lincoln saw the country through it with a thoroughly unusual combination of unbending backbone and compassion.

Napoleon. He was a dictator, and he was insane. But he fought against all the kings of Europe, who wanted to destroy the French Revolution. He was defeated, but it took time and the spirit of the Revolution survived and lives now all over the world. Freedom.
