From a Scottish viewpoint (mine at least) this is all about perpetuating the old Heather, Tartan, Bagpipes, Shortbread etc stereotypes of Scotland. I think people might be misguided enough to think that Scotland is still a quaint wee country stuck in the Victorian Ages. How much do the Americans in New York, or elsewhere actually know about Scotland, is there anyone who is willing to answer that question? Just curious why so many Yanks celebrate this. You are American & not Scottish, same with St Paddy's Day, you are American & not Irish.

I think it's a tribute to Scotland that so many Americans find pleasure in celebrating their Scottish roots. So if it's wearing a tartan tie (ugh) on Tartan day or wearing a Shamrock on St. Pat's to celebrate Ireland, it's all a bit of fun and gives us a change to celebrate our heritage.

Loads of people in the USA have not given up their Scottish traditions, much as they have not, if ancestry is an indication, the other traditions of England or Ireland. It depends on how Americanised they are I suppose.

Having been there and seen it, it seems like just an excuse to get drunk while wearing a kilt and when getting arrested for drunken behaviour claiming "I dinni ken what ye mean pal I'm only havin a laugh".
