There are a ton of places you can buy different devices to protect your lap. Just fiy, the laptop needs more protection from your lap. The extra heat can make a lot of laptops do crazy things.
Check out Staples, Office Depot, Compusa, Fry's, and even Target. Basically, there are two types of devices. One is a passive approach which is basically a fancy way of saying that it's some kind of stilts that raises the laptop off of the surface so that air can circulate underneath. The other approach is some kind of fan or fans in a case that theoretically sucks the heat out of the laptop and expels it out the sides of the device. This kind of device just plugs into your USB port. Be careful with these, I bought one that didn't have enough clearance from the case and actually ground away some of my laptop's underside.

You're really not supposed to sit your laptop on your lap but if you insist... you can purchase a chill mat from best buy. Thin device sits under your laptop, has small fans, and gets power through your usb port. cools laptop tremendously.

go to a hardware store or lumber yard and have them cut you a 1/2 inch thick piece of plexiglass several inches bigger than your laptop. this should be rigid enough to support the laptop and give you plenty of space for air to flow under it. you might also drill a few small holes in the middle of the plexiglass so air can flow through it as well. your choice.

You shouldn't put iton your lap, it blocks the fans on the bottom of your laptop. I put mine on a dinner tray on my lap and it works just fine! =)

Personally, I like the heat my laptop generates. I wonder if yours is overheating a little? It shouldn't be painful to the touch.
