Someone told me they were shocked I didn't celebrate it even after I told them I was Scottish. They then said I didn't celebrate it as I didn't believe in the correct religion whatever that means. The way I see it, the original puprose of this holiday was a religious one, that was celebrated by all faiths in Ireland & elsewhere. Sadly, like the way the Yanks also hijacked Samhuinn (Halloween) & are starting now with "Tartan Day", it has just become too comercialised, people have forgotten the original purpose & just want to hit the pubs to get bladdered!
Thank God you haven't hijacked Beltane yet! We can still do mean Beltane, Samhuinn, Lughnassa & Imbolc festivals here in Scotland.

St Pats day is a great day for the Irish, and the Irish at heart.
Its a day for celebrating our patron saint, just like St George I'm sure, but with a lot more vigour and enthusiasm.
As the Irish are big drinkers and party animals we dont want to let the side down when it comes to knocking back the hard stuff.
People from all over the world come to see us make total fools of ourselves and join in the fun also.
Happy St. Paddys day !!!!

I think the ones getting drunk on St. Patrick's day are getting drunk other days also, it so happens it is a teeny bit more acceptable on St. Pat's!

People get drunk on St Patrick's Day for the same reason they get drunk any other time. The excess consumption of alcohol.

It's a little like American's celebrating the 4th of July. There might be picnics and boating, fireworks, etc. It's the thing to do in Ireland, probably because there are so many Irish pubs.

I can't drink to celebrate the death of a great Fraud. He an't even irish lmfao. They should replace this Holiday and make it Vercingetorix Day ('King of a hundred battles') He was a great person.

Because it's got a 'Y' in it. By law you have to get drunk on any day that ends with a letter 'Y', surely you knew that!
