Hard to answer because I can't determine her personality type. Last year I had a close female companion. She bought me a really nice sweater (expensive at that) that actually fit me right and didn't climb up and expose me when I put my arms in the air (because of my height). She likes athletic wear so I bought her some that she likes and an XM thingy for her car.
I guess it's the effect your looking for that determines what you're looking to buy her. Good luck! :)

I don't know a lot about your girlfriend, but as a woman I can say she might appreciate something that is both thoughtful and useful. I don't know her tastes, but you probably do. Think about her hobbies, and buy her something that could help her pursue them. Like, if she adores hockey, buy her a hockey stick.
If you're still not sure, stick with the safe:
AVOID: clothes. Most people like to choose fashion on their own (and finding out someone's size is a nightmare.)
DON'T AVOID: Go for jewelry, since it's sentimental and heartfelt. Research what her birthstone is, and buy her a necklace or bracelet that has that stone in it. Or, if she isn't into wearing jewelry with stones, try buying her a sleek and easy-to-coordinate silver, gold, or platinum necklace.

Well this seems to work fairly well. I did it once, and my girl loved it. Send her on a scavanger hunt for her gift. On th kitchen table leave a note saying: Go to the place we love to cuddle, and cute stuff like that. Then, have it eventually lead her to her gift. If you get Curve Magazine, they have TONS of gift ideas targeted for Lesbians. If you don't go to Yahoo and search Wolfe Video, it's stacked with lesbian films! I'd then get soem kinky stuff: Handcuffs, chocolate body paint. ANYTHING chocolate, woman CAN'T refuse chocolate!!! And make sure to write in her card that she gets one night of your 100% undivided attention! Top off the night with a massage, and go to "bed"
