I think that first birthdays are so special if spent with friends and family. We had a dinner party for our daughters first birthday. Everyone says that they wont remember it, but it is the best time in life. Your baby is going from a baby to a toddler, and no one wants to miss out on that.
I have been to some partys that they have a pot luck dinner. Everyone brings a dish, you could do that.
We made our cakes we bought a butterfly and flower pan from hobby lobby and they were adorable. It is so easy to decorate them using the bags with different tips. We used plain color plates, napkins, and cups (purple, hot pink, and yellow).
It is also nice to have some of the disposable cameras around, you can buy some that have first birthday message on them when they develop. Or black and white film is also nice.

To be honest, for a child much under 4 years old, birthday parties are more for the parents than the child. Too many people and too much going on, and you're going to have a very overwhelmed and upset (read: CRANKY) child. If you feel compelled to have the huge blowout, then, do whatever you want to celebrate, but don't be shocked or embarassed if your child gets crazy about an hour in - most do.
Personally, I'd have a few people (grandparents, aunts/uncles, godparents, close friends) over for some snacks (maybe a little cookout or something informal) and cake - little kids are cute with the cake because they don't know what to do except play with it. I know someone who did cupcakes for the party so the birthday child could totally ruin one with having fun with it.

She won't remember it...don't go all out. Invite family and close friends for a small get together. Have cake and open some presents. There is no need for games and fancy entertainment. Chances are she will lose interest or become tired and cranky after an hour or two. Her new toys and her family will be entertainment enough. Be sure to take some pictures though...especially ones with her covered in cake!

A one year old doesn't know too much so they wont really appreciate a party like a 4 year old would. I just had family and close friends come over and got a personal cake for baby to mess up and put it in front of him in his high chair and let him go to town!!! Took pictures and let him tear into wrapping paper. He loved it, because it was simple!

People are so worried about planning big spectacular parties for children too small to enjoy it. Keep it to close family and friends (don't invite the neighborhood) and keep it simple. The only thing your guest of honor cares about is the cake and ice cream and balloons.

My daughter truly likes the Gerber puffs. they arrive in distinct flavors and they are straightforward to %. up and they melt in her mouth. those were the first finger ingredients that I gave her until eventually eventually she were given the carry of easily getting them in her mouth, then we moved on to banana (that's hysterical to exhibit screen her attempt to %. up) and shredded cheese. nicely cooked vegetables are sturdy also. i idea that the cheerios were a touch not straightforward and did not dissolve as honestly because the puffs, in spite of the undeniable fact that it truly is my opinion. She is now 9 months old and had banana pancake for the first time this morning.

at that age keep it simple...some family at your house is more then enough...dont waste your money going to someplace like chuck e cheese or other play centers..too noisy and crowded for a 1 yr old....just remember to take pictures and video...mine was more interested in playing with the wrapping paper then anything else

I agree....invite family and close friends! It will be fun watching her eat her first cake and ice cream. Definitely video record it if you can! It will be something she will want to look back at when she is older...
